Welcome to the latest edition of the DMH Stallard Retail Property newsletter, where we concentrate on the 'green' issues facing retailers.

We look in detail at Energy Performance Certificates, considering how and when they apply and what penalties can be imposed for non-compliance. We also offer some practical advice for incorporating these obligations into leases. 

Many commercial property companies and high street retailers are now signing up to what has become known as the “Green Lease”. We summarise the good practice guidelines from the UK Centre for Research in the Built Environment, and the areas that need to be considered to create a Green Lease. 

The Government's decision to abolish Business Rate relief for empty commercial premises is the subject of some rather heated debate at present. Here we look at the implications for UK retailers in practical terms, how the legislation affects empty storage premises and what the likely implications will be.

Finally we look at the obligations imposed on Company Directors under the Companies Act 2006 and how it can shape a business's property portfolio.
