Work Experience

DMH Stallard makes a limited number of one week unpaid work experience placements available for undergraduate and postgraduate students wishing to gain practical experience of working in a law firm. This is aimed at students who have not yet gained a training contract and wish to gain an insight into life at DMH Stallard.

At the current time the work experience scheme is separate from the selection process for the Training Contracts. The aim of our work experience programme is to enable people, at any stage during their legal education, to experience a slice of life in a Law Firm.

Our summer work experience programme has been fully reinstated after a pause due to remote and hybrid working.  However, placements for summer 2024 are now fully booked.  We will accept applications for placements for summer 2025 towards the end of this year and will update the website with details on how to apply closer to the time.

Please note we do not arrange work experience during the Christmas and Easter holidays.

If you have any queries please email recruitment@dmhstallard.com or call 01293 605556.

Previous work experience student comments:

“I am so appreciative of the incredible amount of work I was able to be involved with, and the amount both my supervisors planned for me prior to me attending.”

“I have learnt how to work in a team and how to manage my time. I am more confident now because I have gained good communication skills and a lot of self-management.”

“I have learnt: how a team within a law firm works together; how to prioritise a workload; how to perform legal research in a business environment; how to approach a task considering the audience e.g. client or another solicitor”

“I was surprised to be given so many opportunities to work on different cases. Although the placement was only 5 days I felt the work I was involved in covered a variety of aspects of employment law practice.”

“My previous experience of employment law had been from volunteering at Citizens Advice where we had dealt solely with employees, it was very interesting so see the law functioning from the employer's point of view. I particularly enjoyed see aspects of law I had learnt in my degree being put into practice. I believe I improved my research skills and professional writing style.”
