You will work alongside the 14 Partners and Staff in the Planning team, with the wider Real Estate department consisting of over 107 staff and Partners being based in our other offices.

 

THE FIRM AND ROLE

DMH Stallard is a Legal 100 firm with a headcount of 310, which provides integrated legal services from offices in London, Gatwick, Guildford, Horsham and Brighton. We were awarded Corporate Law Firm of the Year by South East Dealmakers in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2017.

 

We are looking for a newly or recently qualified solicitor to join our Planning team in our Gatwick office.

 

The role is to operate as an effective member of the Planning Group, dealing with  client work, helping with business development activities and assist with building up and maintaining our knowledge base about changing legislation and regulation. The individual will be responsible under supervision for own caseload of work and own fee targets. The primary focus of the work (and the business development activities) will be:

  • Section 106, CIL work
  • Planning/environmental related litigation – i.e. s 288 and s 289 claims, judicial review, defending prosecutions, nuisance cases
  • Planning Appeal  work – inquiries, hearings and written reps
  • Planning applications
  • Project management of large planning applications or litigation
  • Certificates of Lawful Use
  • Highways and other infrastructure agreements
  • Rights of Way advice and related inquiries
  • Village Green advice and related inquiries
  • Corporate Support
  • Property Support
  • Compulsory Purchase advice and related objections, inquiries etc.
  • Statutory Nuisance

WHO AND WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The key criteria for the ideal candidate will include: 

  • An interest in planning, environmental and regulatory work in the widest sense – to include related areas i.e. waste, renewables, highways and other infrastructure, rights of way, compulsory purchase, health and safety, and those listed under 2.4 above.
  • A good understanding of the planning system, environmental law, highways law, compulsory purchase etc. including related legislation and relevant case law.
  • A willingness to contribute to business development and to take on and act in a support role to the Group’s business development campaigns. 
  • The ability to work well in a team and communicate effectively both with the team and with clients.
  • The ability to effectively manage your time to achieve client and internal deadlines.
  • An understanding of the importance of client care with an ability to deal with a wide range of clients with differing objectives including being able to understand the commercial objectives of the client.
  • Confident Excel skills sufficient to enable the reviewing of relevant matters.
  • Competent IT skills including Outlook, Word, Digital Dictation and Axxia.
  • The ability to draft documentation, with attention to detail.
  • An understanding of the strategy and vision of the firm.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, in writing, over the telephone and in meetings.
  • Ability to convey technical legal information in an effective and accessible way, using a commercial, pragmatic and not overly academic approach.
