Are you ready for a Shared Parental Leave requests?

The new Shared Parental Leave (SPL) rights come into force on 1 December which means that from this date parents (either natural or adoptive) of a child born (or adopted) on or after 5th April 2015 will be able to share the statutory leave and pay that is currently available only to women.

SPL is designed to give parents more flexibility in caring for their child in the first year following birth or adoption but for employers it will make dealing with parents-to-be in the workplace more complex.

In preparation for receiving your first SPL request, you should have:

  • an understanding of the complex statutory rules;
  • a basic SPL policy and process in place; and
  • an answer to some potentially difficult question about enhanced pay.
