The aftermath of the White Paper…the latest planning consultation

31 Oct 2017

On 16 September the government published its latest planning consultation called Planning for the Right Homes in the Right Places, further to the White Paper (Fixing our Broken Housing Market) which aims to deliver 1,000,000 new homes by 2020 and 500,000 more by 2022.

The consultation seeks views on proposals to change the planning system to increase the supply of new homes.  These proposals include:

  1. a suggested formula for calculating housing need
  2. amending the NPPF to clarify that housing need must be assessed using a robust method
  3. amending the NPPF to require all local planning authorities to produce a strategic statement of common ground over an agreed area, setting out cross-boundary need, distribution and proposals
  4. increasing planning application fees by 20% for those local planning who are meeting their housing need.

It is expected for the NPPF to be revised in 2018.

The consultation closes on 9 November 2017 and is available here:
