Dealing with stalkers – the law

Earlier this week, a man who had stalked BBC news presenter Emily Maitliss was jailed for three years for breaches of a restraining order. However, it is not just those in the public eye who can experience stalking. Unwanted harassment can be suffered by many people, particularly women. Recently, I have been involved in advising two young women who were stalked by the same man for a period of years. Fortunately, the law in the UK gives victims significant rights against stalkers. In our cases, we were able to take effective action in the English courts to put a stop to campaigns of stalking that had been carried on in the US as well as the UK. The law in the US simply did not allow the victims to take effective action.
