02 Nov 2017

The Octopus Publishing Group has acquired Summersdale, one of the UK’s most respected independent book publishers. Summersdale produces a diverse range of over 150 titles per year, with a backlist of over 600 titles.

The Octopus Publishing Group is the illustrated books division of Hachette UK, the second largest publishing group in the UK. It has a heritage of working with talented authors and strong brands and is known for creating high quality illustrated books with innovative design, vision and commercial appeal.

The corporate team at DMH Stallard acted for Summersdale in the sale that will see Managing Director, Alastair Williams, continue in his role along with all 23 existing employees, who will remain based in Chichester.

Jonathan Grant, Partner at DMH Stallard, led the team advising Summersdale. He said:

“Over the last 27 years Alastair has turned Summersdale into a multi award-winning company that enjoys great respect across the book publishing sector.

“The deal sees Octopus Publishing acquire a 100% shareholding and I’m delighted that the experience and specialist expertise provided by Alastair and his team will be maximised within the group.”

This is one of a series of publishing deals over the last couple of years for DMH Stallard with the most recent being the acquisition of Unity Media by the Mark Allen Group.

Alastair & Charlotte Williams said:

“We really can’t speak highly enough of Jonathan Grant and the team at DMH Stallard for the amazing job they have done.  Selling a business is emotional and complex, and they have calmly and expertly guided us through the process from start to finish.”
