Nigel’s family law practice includes an increasing number of high net worth (HNW) clients and, in particular, business owners with wealth to protect, or indeed wealth against which to make a claim.
“…as part of the divorce settlement you were wise enough to negotiate the inclusion of a clause that said I would be entitled to a share in the proceeds from sale (of ex–spouse’s company). How grateful I am. The company was sold earlier this week for £53 million!” – Family Law client
Clients are drawn from the local community and increasingly further afield. One of Nigel’s great skills is to spot the correct result in a case early on, and never waiver from pursuit of the correct outcome. Critically, he never advises clients to pursue a line of argument that isn’t likely to yield the result sought after.
He is ruthlessly commercial, advising clients on the most cost-effective outcome, particularly where that compromise is such that when legal costs are factored in, the client emerges with more of their wealth than would otherwise be the case.
Nigel is also a collaborative lawyer, a means of dispute resolution he will recommend where the parties want an amicable settlement but critically where there is trust and honesty.
Nigel also advises in respect of pre-nuptial and cohabitation agreements, divorce and children disputes. Children Act proceedings requires particular sensitivity and can be complex with a need for careful interpretation of the evidence. Nevertheless, the best wishes of the children must prevail.
Nigel feels that the law has been good to him and in order to ‘give something back’ he set up a free family clinic some in Horsham 15 years ago, which he still runs to this day. It is known to volunteer groups across the region and has been an immense success.
In addition to this, Nigel presents the ‘Resident of the Month Award’ to unsung heroes within the local community who deserve recognition for their outstanding contribution to society.
Nigel works primarily in our Horsham office but also collaborates closely with colleagues in our other locations.
