REAL ESTATE DISPUTE RESOLUTION

DMH Stallard makes ‘outstanding’ real estate hire

City law firm DMH Stallard has bolstered its real estate dispute resolution team with the appointment of Roger Cohen as a consultant.

Roger served as a Senior Counsel at the global firm Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner (BCLP) until November 2024 and was previously a partner at BCLP from 1989 to 2021.

He specialises in commercial property litigation, representing developers, investors and occupiers. He is also an expert in business rates litigation.

Roger acted for Tesco Stores and Tesco Bank in their successful rating litigation concerning the rateability of ATMs hosted by stores.  He also represented the Rating Surveyors’ Association and the British Property Federation in their intervention in the Supreme Court appeal in Monk v Newbigin (VO) – concerning the rating of premises undergoing construction.

In an appeal that followed on from Monk, Roger acted for Canary Wharf Group in successfully resisting a VO’s appeal to the Upper Tribunal, against the Valuation Tribunal’s decision in favour of the ratepayer.

Emily Wood, Partner and Group Head of Real Estate Dispute Resolution at DMH Stallard, said:

“Roger’s track record is nothing short of outstanding and I’m absolutely delighted to welcome him to DMH Stallard.

Roger possesses a depth of knowledge and breadth of experience that is second to none, particularly in the field of business rates litigation.”

Roger is a CEDR-accredited mediator. His expertise has earned him recognition as a Senior Statesman in Chambers & Partners UK and a place in the Legal 500 Hall of Fame. He is also an honorary member of the Rating Surveyors’ Association.

Roger said:

“I know Emily well having worked with her and colleagues from DMH Stallard on the ATMs case.  I am delighted to be Joining a team of their quality and with their rating credentials.

I look forward to working with clients and contributing to the firm’s overall success and strengthening the rating expertise of the real estate dispute resolution team.”
